What are the common sludge treatment and disposal methods?

The commonly used sludge treatment methods are thickening, digestion, dehydration, drying, incineration, solidification and comprehensive utilization. In addition, there are final disposal methods for sanitary landfill. Among them, sludge thickening, digestion and dehydration are the main treatment methods widely used at present. The common sludge treatment systems are divided into four categories: ① thickening → mechanical dewatering → disposal of dewatering filter cake; ② thickening → mechanical dewatering → incineration → ash disposal; ③ thickening → digestion → mechanical dewatering → disposal of dewatering filter cake; ④ thickening → digestion → mechanical dehydration → incineration → ash disposal.

According to the type, nature, production state, source and other conditions of sludge, various disposal methods are as follows.

(1) The sludge with stable, no outflow, no dissolution, no odor and spontaneous combustion can be directly disposed on the ground or landfilled.

(2) The sludge that will produce malodorous organic matter but will not flow out or dissolve can be directly disposed on the ground, layered landfill or mixed with soil in suitable areas. The organic components can also be converted into stable and harmless substances (such as water, carbon dioxide, nitrogen, etc.) by combustion and wet oxidation, and the remaining inorganic substances can be disposed on the ground or landfilled.

(3) Considering the factors such as dissolution, gas generation, odor and easy to ignite, the sludge with small quantity which has impact on the environment needs to be buried underground directly.

(4) Sludge containing harmful substances should be solidified before being disposed by land or sea.

(5) In order to save resources and energy, it is necessary to consider the recycling of useful components of sludge when the disposal of sludge is difficult and can be concentrated.
